Many others like Pamban Swamigal, Sri T. Thiruppugazh is meant to be rendered in harmony with Raga, in rhythm to thala, with full knowledge of the meaning and with full devotion bhava. At each of these, he composed songs in praise of Murugan, which are collected together in the Thiruppugazh. He did not find any difference between Hari and Hara. Having been a student of Thiruppugazh for many years, I thought that by the excuse of a book, I can learn more and hence this attempt.

There are no historical records un the life of Arunagirinaathar, and what we know of the composition of the Thiruppugazh is largely derived from oral traditions and legends recorded in commentaries on the work. His son, ‘Thanigai Mani’ Sri Chengalvaraya Pillai, a great devotee of Lord Muruga, taamil the task left behind by his father and brought many Thiruppugazh songs in printed format.

From being blessed with whatever he thinks best for him, he ultimately gets blessed with what Muruga thinks best for him; to liberate him from the morass of repeated life and death. Thiruppugazh is panacea for all ills.

However, only the works of Arunagirinathar have got the name “Thiruppugazh” because he alone succeeded, to a great extent, in describing the glorious qualities of the Lord vividly, completely and comprehensively.
